Project Healthy Living extends now through May 16 This spring, United Health Organization (UHO) will administer over 30 Project Healthy Living sites in six Michigan counties. In 2009, UHO expects to serve over 15,000 participants. We thank everyone for their support over the last 41 years! UHO and Project Healthy Living are "going green" this year. In the interest of saving paper, postage, and the planet, UHO will skip the traditional direct mail campaign this year. We invite you to join our email list and recieve electronic alerts about upcoming events. Please send us your email address with the words "contact info" in the subject line to projecthealth2009@gmail.com. We will limit our emails to no more than 10 per year and will not release your information to any other source. Project Healthy Living is 41 Years Old! Project Healthy Living 2009 (Formerly Project Health-O-Rama) For over forty years we have been offering free and low cost health screenings to Southeast Michigan. Our fortieth year marked several changes in Project Healthy Living -- we now have fewer but larger sites designed to provide better and more diversified services. We hope to see you at one of our sites running from March 16th through May 16th. New Tests for 2009: We are pleased to announce that for 2009 we will be offfering some new and innovative low cost tests. These tests include - Vitamin D, Hepatitis B, Hemoglobin A1C, Glycomark, Herpes 1 & 2, H.pylori Breath Test, and a new more accurate, easier to use colorectal kit. Low cost tests include: A 23-profile blood panel - $40 (a $400 value) includes total cholesterol, thyroid, calcium, protein, albumin, glucose, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, platelets, hemoglobin, and much more. A four-hour fast is recommended - water, plain tea or black coffee are the only suggested food or drinks. Take all prescribed medications. Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test for men - $25 ($75 value) screenings for prostate cancer. An annual PSA is recommended beginning at age 50 (age 40 for African American men). It is recommended that men planning to take this test refrain from ejaculation for 48 hours prior to testing. CA-125 Blood Test for Women - $25 ($95 value) Cancer antigen test that may detect ovarian cancer. Note: It is possible to have ovarian cancer even if you have had a hysterectomy -- some ovarian tissue may remain in the body. C - Reactive Protein Blood Test - $25 tests for increased CRP, a substance produced by the liver when increased inflammation is present in the body that may identify risk for caridovascular disease, heart attack or stroke. This test is NOT recommended for those with chronic inflammation such as arthritis. H. Pylori Blood Test - $15 ($110 value) May detect ulcers, gastritis and other stomach ailments. Note: Once you have tested positive for H.Pylori, even though treated, you will continue to test positive. This test is recommended for people who are experiencing stomach problems. | Stroke/Artery Screenings: Carotid Arteries: Images carotid arteries for blockage using Duplex Imaging Ultrasound. Many strokes are associated with blockages in the carotid arteries that may be detected with an ultrasound. $35.00
Abdominal Aorta(Aneurysm Screen): Images aorta using Duples Imaging Ultrasound. Abdominal aortic aneurysms form as a result of a weakness in the lining of the artery wall that may be detected with an ultrasound. $55.00 The participant must make an appointment with Complete Diagnostics at 248-585-0200 if they want to have this test.
ABI (Ankle Brachial Index): Uses Doppler Ultrasound for evidence of poor circulation know as Peripheral Vascular Disease. Excellent baseline screen for individuals with evidence of coronary artery disease, family history, or those that are sedentary. $25.00
Echocardiogram: $50 must call to schedule 248-585-0200. Echocardiogram is a video ultrasound of the heart. It may detect enlargement of the heart, valve abnormalities, blood clots and tumors. The participant must make an appointment with Complete Diagnostics at 248-585-0200 if they want to have this test.
Electrocardiogram (EKG): EKG may detect ischemia, silent heart attack and atrial fibrillation, EKG provides a picture of the electrical activity of the heart. $25.00
